While more accessible than the 2001, the 2000 Gigondas Prestige des Hautes Garrigues is explosive in its fruit-driven, powerful style. Inky/purple-colored, with a sumptuous perfume of liquid minerals, pepper, blackberries, acacia flowers, and hints of blueberries as well as cassis, this full-bodied classic has terrific palate penetration and mouth-staining levels of extract. There are no hard edges, but there is noticeable tannin in the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020. As I indicated in 2001, Yves Gras, one of the most talented producers of Gigondas, is also offering wines under a negociant label called Santa Duc Selections. These offerings are made from purchased fruit, as opposed to the estate-bottled efforts that appear under the name Domaine Santa Duc.Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel.
