Bitouzet's 1993s are well-made wines exhibiting deep color, some of the vintage's hard tannin, but excellent richness and ripeness. The Volnay Taillepieds requires 3-4 years of cellaring and may merit a higher score if the tannin melts away and the fruit holds. It is deeply-colored, exhibiting plenty of raspberry and black-cherry fruit nicely complemented by spicy oak. Although it is firmly structured, it possesses a sweet mid-palate as well as excellent purity and ripeness. Bitouzet is better known for his white than red wines, but the reds, especially the Volnay-Clos des Chenes, Volnay Pitures, and Volnay Taillepieds, are attractive, well-made wines. They rarely hit the highest qualitative peaks, but they are consistently authentic examples of Volnay. They can last for 5-10 years.Importer: Neal Rosenthal, Select Vineyards, Shekomeko, NY; tel.
