The 1989 single vineyard Barolo Sarmassa reveals toasty new oak, excellent ripeness, medium to full body, and a rich, pure, modern style that offers concentration, complexity, and plenty of sweet, ripe fruit. It is a wine to drink during its first decade of life. It represents a dramatic improvement and commitment to quality from one of Barolo's most historical estate.
The late Sheldon Wasserman probably stated it best in his comprehensive book on the red wines of Italy when he wrote, "Marchesi di Barolo owns 100 acres of vineyards, including some of the best sites in Barolo, a fact unfortunately not evident in their wines." This longtime underachiever has finally begun to turn out rich, complex wines.
