The two current releases of Pinot Noir from Calera are both successful. The 1989 Pinot Noir-Reed Vineyard displays a surprisingly deep, nearly opaque dark ruby color, a big, intense, earthy, spicy, herb, smoke-scented nose, and rich, black cherry flavors intermingled with the suggestion of Provencal herbs, spicy new oak, and chocolate. This complete, rich, moderately tannic wine is approachable now, but capable of lasting for a decade. This winery continues to solidify its position as America's top producer of Pinot Noir.
