From an organic vineyard some 350 meters in altitude inland from the coast, the 2016 Capatosta is 100% Sangiovese in this vintage, showing a big plumpness of fruit and ripe notes of cherry. It does a year in tonneaux, yielding only subtle spice spread out over a mid-weight feel. This is an easygoing and cheerful red that's ready for a simple penne all'arrabbiata.

The 2013 Morellino di Scansano Capatosta makes light of stubbornness. The vineyard is located 400 meters above sea level. The wine is aged in neutral barrique sourced from the celebrated Tua Rita winery. This is pure Sangiovese in all its glory. Poggio Argentiera has harnessed the rough side of Sangiovese and transformed it into a polished and silky red wine. The effect is effortless, but the wine deserves applause nonetheless.

The 2009 Morellino di Scansano Capatosta is a pretty wine laced with fragrant red cherries, licorice, tobacco and spices. The aromas and flavors seem to waft from the glass in this delicate Morellino. Stylistically, the 2009 is a huge departure from previous vintages as the estate is moving to a far less extracted approach than the past. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. Poggio Argentiera has moved away from the rich, powerful wines of the past towards a much more laid back, delicate, feminine style. The new approach at Poggio Argentiera shows promise, but changes this radical usually take a few years to fully execute, so this crop of current releases should be viewed as works in progress.
