The Podere Sapaio 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Volpolo (a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot) is a terrific value with an ambitious 70,000 bottles in production. The bouquet opens carefully, first showing violet, iris root, dark cherry and potting soil. There are background tones of birchwood and cedar. I say buy this wine by the case, not the bottle.

The organic Podere Sapaio 2019 Bolgheri Rosso Volpolo is a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parts Merlot and Petit Verdot. This vintage shows nice freshness and brightness and a good dose of extra fruit weight and concentration. The bouquet is clean and precise with dark cherry, blackcurrant and plum. The fruit is neatly framed by spice and sweet tobacco. This is a great vintage of the Tuscan-souled Volpolo.

The 2018 Bolgheri Rosso Volpolo is an organic blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot aged in barrique for 14 months. This vintage saw cool temperatures in the spring and warmed up considerably toward the end of the ripening season. This Tuscan blend reveals dark fruit and cherry with mild spice and tobacco. There is a nice informality to this wine, something you might pair with a plate of polpette (meatballs) in tomato sauce, and although the palate shows moderate intensity and length, this vintage delivers an accessible and easy-drinking treat from the coast of Tuscany. About 73,500 bottles were released.

Made with organically farmed grapes, the Podere Sapaio 2017 Bolgheri Rosso Volpolo is a softly pliant and charming wine. The Volpolo is Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot and Petit Verdot from a gem of an estate that works hard to deliver on the promise of the great Bolgheri appellation. From a warm and dry vintage, this wine is remarkably seamless in terms of its aromatic delivery, with blackberry and plum that cede slowly to smoke, tar and spice. There is some dryness or astringency that comes with the tannins, and this is something I noticed across the vintage. That said, Tuscan red wine enthusiasts get good value in this release of 83,000 bottles.

The 2016 Bolgheri Rosso Volpolo is balanced and bright, with notes of blackberry, black olive, sweet spice and cigar box. The wine ages in barrique for 14 months. There is some astringency at this early stage, but the wine should smooth out nicely. Some 90,000 bottles were produced.
