Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi from Tollot-Beaut has a ripe and generous bouquet with ample red cherries, wild strawberry and orange blossom scents—more feminine and sensual than some of its peers. The oak is conspicuous though nicely integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, smooth in texture with a modern sheen that perhaps just detracts from its terroir expression. Easy-drinking in style and toothsome, but it needs to develop more personality. Though it does not match my expectations from barrel, it remains an enjoyable Beaune premier cru. Tasted September 2017.
