The 2013 Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi, which was just brushed by the hail and was the first to be picked, is quite strict and laconic on the nose despite my coaxing from the glass. There are faint scents of blackberry and wild hedgerow, perhaps a touch of sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip, a saline note developing toward the sinewy finish. This is not bad, but just needs to develop a little flair.
