The 2006 Barolo Cerequio from Contratto offers up sweet red fruit, spices and generous French oak. There is terrific density and depth to the fruit all the way through to the round finish. Cerequio is one of the very finest vineyards in Italy, a Grand Cru among Grand Crus, but there is little of that personality to be found here, which is a shame, to put it mildly. That said, when the raw materials are this good, it is virtually impossible to make a bad wine. There is little doubt in my mind Contratto’s Cerequio could be a much more important Barolo. Contratto’s 2005 Barolo Cerequio is a pretty, mid-weight wine with attractive aromas of soy sauce, spices, cocoa, plums and menthol. The Cerequio offers good length and balance, even if some level of depth in the fruit is missing in this vintage. Today, the tannins come across as a bit rough around the edges, but a few years of bottle age should help to some extent. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022. Contratto’s 2004 Barolo Cerequio is a medium-bodied offering redolent of perfumed, ripe fruit and sweet toasted oak. The wine possesses excellent density and firmness, yet well-integrated tannins. Delicate, floral, sweet fruit. Moreish, long, seemingly absent structure, though it is all there. Wonderful stuff. Long.
