The Solanes bottling utilizes all five of the red grape varieties grown in Priorat, while the Classic bottling is produced only in top vintages, the last being 2001. The 2004 Solanes is composed of 40% Carinena, 30% Garnacha, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon,10% Merlot, and 5% Syrah aged for 14 months in seasoned barrels. Deep crimson-colored, it gives up an alluring bouquet of slate, scorched earth, cedar, blueberry, black cherry, and black currant. Full-bodied and smooth textured, the wine conceals enough silky tannin to permit another 2-3 years of evolution in the cellar. Sweetly fruited, ripe, and surprisingly elegant for its size, this tasty Priorat will provide pleasure through 2020. It is also a very good value for the D.O.Q. of Priorat.
