Produced from 30 to 50-year-old vines, the 1998 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes (aged in 30% new oak) reveals aromas of sweet cherries and plums. Medium-bodied and velvety-textured, it has a jammy, dark cherry, fruit-filled character. The vintage's firm tannins can be discerned under this wine's impressive layers of fruit, so it should be consumed sooner rather than later. Projected maturity: now-2004.
