Fattoria Le Pupille’s 2009 Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente takes a little while to fully appreciate. As you first approach the glass, you are hit by a massive wave of black truffle and forest floor. The wine is dominated by a wild and rustic personality that so faithfully mirrors the territory that shaped it. After a few minutes those truffle aromas start to lift, revealing small berry nuances and delicate dustings of exotic spice. Worth noting also is the acidic freshness on display. I came back to this wine 30 minutes and one hour later. Each time, it had gained in elegance and finesse. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. There is always a single face that identifies a region: A sole producer with the charisma and communicative talents required to perform the ambassadorial duties that bring a relatively obscure wine area to the world stage.
