The medium dark ruby-colored 1998 Morellino di Scansano Poggio Valente, a single vineyard of Sangiovese, exhibits dusty red and black cherry fruit intermixed with spice, earth, and damp foresty aromas. Medium-bodied and soft, it is best drunk over the next 2-3 years. Shrewd value-seekers should seek out wines from the Morellino di Scansano appellation as this is increasingly becoming a source for tasty as well as, for the moment, underpriced reds. The American importer for Fattoria Le Pupille has recently changed and I am unaware of their current representative.
