It is obvious from the last several years of wine releases from Grgich Hills that at least four or five dozen wineries in northern California have by-passed this producer. Grgich's 1995 Zinfandel is typical of the old style California winemaking - overly manipulated, acidified, denuded wines that win high marks from the techno-wizards, but provide little interest or pleasure for those who actually consume wine. There are correct, albeit vague aromas of cherries in this dusty, medium-bodied wine. Austere, with high acidity, and an attenuated personality, this Zinfandel already has one foot in the grave.
