The blockbuster 2010 Vacqueyras Les Genestes is a candidate for Vacqueyras of the vintage. A blend of 53% Grenache and 47% Syrah aged totally in concrete, it came in at 15.5% natural alcohol. Boasting a full-bodied mouthfeel as well as a terrific nose of licorice, white chocolate, creme de cassis and kirsch, it is a pure, heady, sumptuously textured, full-throttle, pedal-to-the metal Vacqueyras that is classic Provencal in its aromatic and flavor profiles. Enjoy it over the next decade.
Domaines des Amouriers, owned by the Chudzikiewicz family, has long been one of my favorite Vacqueyras estates. As long as I have been writing about the Rhone Valley, Amouriers has been making top-flight wines. Traditionally made Vacqueyras is produced from their 35-acre vineyard beautifully situated on the plateau of “Garrigue,” just north of the village of Sarrians.
