Last tasted from a sampling of barrels, the Boillot 2008 Pommard Les Croix Noires - from old vines in this tiny, obscure cru - displays juicier primary fruit (blueberry and blackberry) and a greater sense of elegance and transparency to mineral and woodsy complexities than do most of its stable mates. Peat and chalk notes inform the clinging finish of this Pommard that is it's true a bit youthfully austere, but is likely to reward revisiting over the next 6-8 years at least. Pierre Boillot - Lucien's grandson, for details on whose history, properties, and connection with other Boillots, see issues and 186 and 170 - noted that his Cote de Beaune fruit required more rigorous sorting in 2008 than did that from the Cote de Nuits, and the former resulted in several wines of relatively aggressive astringency. I tasted his 2008s prior to their March and April bottlings, and (except where noted) assembled from tank.
