The 2003 Chianti Rufina Riserva adds 10% Merlot to the Sangiovese and is aged in smaller 5-hectoliter casks. It naturally shows a darker color than the normal bottling along with a gorgeous nose and pretty notes of super-ripe black cherries, chocolate, licorice, tar and grilled herbs. Made in a full-bodied style that expresses the opulence of the vintage, it offers outstanding length and lovely balance, with enough fruit to cover the hard tannins of the vintage and a slight note of sweetness from the oak on the finish. It is very strong effort from I Veroni. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2015.
