Rinaldi's 1990 Barolo is cut from the same mold as the 1989. As tannic, rustic, and uncivilized as it appears, it possesses greater richness, more aromatic and flavor dimension, and because of its high extraction of fruit, a better chance to reach old age in a relatively balanced state of drinkability with its fruit tannin, acid, and alcohol in harmony.
There can be no doubt that Giuseppe Rinaldi stands squarely in the midst of Barolo's traditionalists. The 1989 and 1990 Barolos are authoritatively flavored, rich, rustic, savagely tannic, old style Barolos that often shock modern day sensitivities with their blasts of tannin, sometimes funky smells, and thick, chewy fruit. I am on the side that favors these two controversial, blockbuster styles of wines, but readers should be aware that they require considerable patience.
