Rinaldi's 1989 Barolo is, to the surprise of no one, massively endowed, extremely backward, and almost impossible to evaluate at such as young age. It needs 5-7 years of cellaring and will last for 20-25 years. Given the monstrous tannins, the question of whether it will ever achieve complete harmony should be left to a wizard. Nevertheless, one has to admire its huge, full-bodied richness, purity, and faithfulness to this particular style of Barolo. Do not open a bottle before the turn of the century. There can be no doubt that Giuseppe Rinaldi stands squarely in the midst of Barolo's traditionalists. The 1989 and 1990 Barolos are authoritatively flavored, rich, rustic, savagely tannic, old style Barolos that often shock modern day sensitivities with their blasts of tannin, sometimes funky smells, and thick, chewy fruit. I am on the side that favors these two controversial, blockbuster styles of wines, but readers should be aware that they require considerable patience. Importer: Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY.
