The entry-level 2005 Barolo Lecinquevigne (‘the five vineyards’) is a very pretty, harmonious Barolo perfect for near-term drinking. Red fruit, raspberries, flowers and spices come to life in this accessible and appealing Barolo. Damilano gives the Lecinquevigne 18 months in Slavonian oak followed by 12 months in small French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020. This is a very nice set of Barolos from Damilano that show a move towards a higher and more consistent level of quality than has been the case in the past, good news especially since Damilano controls more than half of the Cannubi vineyard, traditionally considered one of Barolo’s top sites. Damilano does a very good job with its blend of grapes from five different vineyards. It’s a non-cru wine that achieves balance and elegance and that speaks highly of the territory it comes from.
