While disappointing prior to bottling, the 1999 Hermitage Le Meal is close to outstanding. Although closed, with coaxing it displays a saturated ruby color as well as a striking perfume of creme de cassis intermixed with minerals. The wine possesses excellent concentration and moderately high tannin. It is significantly better than my notes last year suggested. However, patience will be essential. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015.
