Tasted from magnum, the 1988 Chateau Nairac has a pleasant bouquet that perhaps lacks the chutzpah of the 1976 served alongside, but shares that telltale chlorine note that pricks the scents of mandarin, marmalade and dried quince. The palate is balanced and clearly fully mature with notes of dried apricot and orange rind. It feels a little frayed at the edges toward the finish, whereas the 1976 demonstrates superior harmony and poise. The bottom line is that this represents a good 1988 Sauternes rather than a great one. Drink now. Tasted March 2014.
