The saturated ruby/garnet-hued 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits a spice box, root vegetable, licorice, black cherry, and pepper-scented perfume. The lovely aromatics are followed by a wine with excellent density, soft tannins, and full body. It should drink well for 10-12 years. One of Chateauneuf du Pape’s outstanding estates, Mas de Boislauzon is in the northern tier of the appellation, and has produced a brilliant succession of vintages over the last decade or more. As always, the differences in these vintages are broadly and dramatically expressed, with the 2007 gloriously fruity, juicy, pure, full-bodied and powerful as well as incredibly fresh. It represents a hypothetical blend of 1990 and 2001, with a dose of 1998 thrown in. 2006 is a vintage for those who love all the spices of the Southern Rhone as the wines tend to possess an earthy, spicy, peppery, garrigue-dominated profile. There is no shortage of fruit or body, but the presentation is completely different than in 2007.Importer: Alain Junguenet, Wines of France, Mountainside, NJ; tel. (908) 654-6173
