A sleeper of the vintage, this tiny estate in northern Chateauneuf du Pape has produced one of the vintage's stars. It is on a fast evolutionary track, so readers lucky enough to latch onto a few bottles should plan to drink it over the next 5-7 years. Tasted twice, once in a peer group tasting and once drunk with a meal, this wine delivers everything expected of a hedonistic, spicy, fruit-driven Chateauneuf du Pape. The wine's saturated dark ruby color is accompanied by aromas of fruitcake, pepper, black cherries, and black currants. There is also a touch of olive, plenty of cedar, and gobs of fruit in this full-bodied, velvety-textured, hedonistic wine. The producers, Daniel and Monique Chaussy, do not make much wine, but this is one of the gems of the 1996 vintage.Importer: Alain Junguenet, Wines of France, Mountainside, NJ; tel. (908) 654-6173
