Tasted as a barrel sample and from newer, high density plantings and aged in 40% new French oak (which is up from the normal 20%), the 2011 Syrah Hilltops has loads of potential with big, upfront black and blue fruits, creamy licorice, crushed flowers and solid minerality to go with beautiful purity and precision on the palate. It's seriously impressive and I love the mix of richness and purity. It should have over a decade of longevity. Drink 2015-2021.
Under the guidance of Sashi Moorman (of Sandhi Wines and the winemaker here since 2001), this estate has slowly moved toward earlier picking and slightly more fresh, elegant wines.
