The late Madame Péré-Vergé worked incredibly hard with one of her consulting oenologists, Michel Rolland, to resurrect the quality of Montviel. She had far more success with La Violette and Le Gay, but this property is certainly on the upswing as well. The 2005 Montviel is deep ruby/plum-colored, with attractive black cherry and mocha notes. It is somewhat compact and monolithic, but well-made, with slightly higher acidity than other Pomerols. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
