The 2005 Shiraz – Viognier (4%) was sourced from old vines yielding 0.65 tons of fruit per acre and spent 28 months aging in seasoned French oak. It, too, has a brooding bouquet and is very tightly wound on the palate. It has the raw materials for greatness but will require considerable patience from those who purchase it. The balance is there so it may well be worth a gamble.
Dan Standish, who started his namesake winery in 1999, was once a winemaker at Torbreck and, like David Powell, is a fan of Rhone wines.
