Blended of 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier, the 2002 The Relic Shiraz / Viognier was matured for 14 months in 2 to 3 year French oak. Deep garnet in color, it gives intensely meaty / gamey aromas over a core of warm blackberry and black cherry compote with nuances of tar, earth, licorice, espresso and black olives. The palate is full-bodied and generous with a relatively modest alcohol of 14.5% declared, medium-high acid and a medium-firm level of fine tannins, finishing long and graceful. Just starting to evolve, consider drinking it now to 2018.
