From the Gewann "Am oberen Brunnenh?uschen" inside the Morstein (and two plots above the Morstein GG core parcels), the 2022 Riesling Alte Reben La Borne opens with an enormously chalky, refined and elegant bouquet of perfectly ripe and polished Riesling aromas. Juicy, refined and with delicate tannins, this is a round, saline and finely tannic Riesling with some rich sweetness now. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2023.

Wittmann's to-be-auctioned 2021 Riesling Alte Reben La Borne offers a deep, pure, fresh and very chalky bouquet that intertwines with ripe and concentrated lemon notes; the nose is puristic and almost ascetic but on the other hand also very exciting for exactly the same reasons. On the palate, this is a silky, or better velvety, round, refined and elegant La Borne with intense, lush and charmingly textured fruit structured by fine and silky limestone acidity, fine tannins and a persistent, uplifting salinity. The La Borne is probably the most adored at this stage, but it is rare and (most probably) expensive and most of the readers will never taste it. For those, I'd like to say: Buy the Morstein, because it is extraordinary. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022.

The to-be-auctioned Riesling trocken 2020 Riesling Alte Reben La Borne (Versteigerung) comes from a parcel above the Morstein. The wine opens very clear and delicately spicy on the pure and stony nose that combines mineral freshness with deep, elegant and juicy fruit. Puristic, grippy and very salty on the palate, this is a refined, elegant and, compared to 2019, less dramatic Riesling that was aged in a 600-liter oak barrel. Tasted in Wiesbaden at the end of August 2021.

The 2019 Riesling Alte Reben La Borne is, like the Morstein, more dusty than fruity and is as rich and intense as it is pure, limey and stony. Complex, tight and tensioned as well as fresh and vital, with lots off lemon flavors, this is a long-distance runner with remarkable finesse and tension and stimulating salinity. Again, this is a twin of the Morstein yet with the finessed genetics of the Brunnenh?uschen. Tasted as a sample in April 2020.
