Walnuts, sandalwood, cloves, dried cherries and tobacco on the nose. It’s chewy and firm with compact tannins and a full body. Dried spices on a firm finish. Try in 2026.

The organic 2019 Barolo (with 15,000 bottles produced) offers medium-lean concentration with a bouquet that wavers between the fruity and the savory. There are jumps between dried cherry and cinnamon, plum and spice. These give the wine a sense of fluid movement and energy, and you'll want to wait a few more years to allow this pretty wine to find its comfortable baseline.

This is round and succulent, featuring cherry, raspberry, iron, eucalyptus and earth flavors. Compact on the finish for now, yet persists, with savory notes lingering. Best from 2025 through 2040. 4,050 cases made, 2,250 cases imported.??–BS??Region: Italy / Piedmont / Barolo Select to Add

The Tenuta Rocca 2017 Barolo (made with organic fruit) shows terrific balance and is another wine that outperforms the difficulties encountered in this hot and dry vintage. What makes this wine stand out, along with the other new releases from this estate, is the softness and caressing quality of the mouthfeel. There is some tightness from the young tannins, but that silky texture balances those out.

The Tenuta Rocca 2016 Barolo is fragrant, generous and nicely chiseled or direct in terms of its aromas. This estate excels with this group of new releases. The wine is beautiful and convincing, especially in terms of the intensity and purity of its aromas. It shows a core of vibrant fruit, and it contours that fruit elegantly with spice, tar, smoke and iron ore. The tannins are youthful and carefully folded into the fruity texture of the wine. Like all the other wines in this report, I opened the bottle hours before my tasting and double decanted my sample. Some 5,400 bottles were released.
