The 2004 was reviewed here previously and the 2005 Ramos-Paul appears to be even better. It is composed of 55% Tempranillo, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Merlot and Syrah. The wine was aged in barrel for 18 months followed by 3 years in bottle prior to release. Opaque purple in color with the oak fully integrated, it offers up enticing aromas of violets, Asian spices, incense, lavender, and assorted black fruits. Structured on the palate with layered savory fruit, this well-proportioned, lengthy offering will evolve for several years and provide enjoyment through 2020 if not longer.
Ronda, located about 40 miles from Gibraltar, was a highly regarded wine region in the pre-phylloxera 19th century. Today it lacks an entry in The Oxford Companion to Wine, 3rd edition. However, thanks to people like the estate owner, Jose Manuel Ramos-Paul and progressive importers like Jose Pastor, such regions are being resurrected.
