Notes of dried red berries, dried citrus peel, chocolate and dried herbs with some savory and earthy character. Hints of tea leaves and undergrowth. Medium- to full-bodied, dry and juicy with fine, slightly chewy tannins. It shows austerity but with a refined and polished nature. Lingering and broad. Shows focus and harmony. Better after 2025.

A smoky, spicy version, this red evokes flavors of cherry, earth, smoky spices and iron. Firm and powerful, with a wide swath of muscular tannins, this is well-balanced overall, but could use a bit more time to integrate the tannins. The 2015 Barolo Ginestra Riserva (in a heavy glass bottle) has a sweet note of dried currant or kirsch that evokes a vintage that saw a lot of summer sunshine and warm temperatures. The 2015 vintage regularly delivers roundness and exuberance that I think you can recognize across the appellation. This Riserva is plump and concentrated with extra fruit weight. It shows an unfortunate 15.5% alcohol content, which is a lot for a grape as delicately nuanced as Nebbiolo. Production is 4,000 bottles.

With attractive packaging and a heavy glass bottle, this is a handsome wine from a very difficult growing season. The Paolo Conterno 2014 Barolo Ginestra Riserva is proper and tight with ethereal aromas of small berry fruit, smoke, tar and old spice. These elements take a little extra time to align and come into focus as the wine slowly opens in the glass. Tart cherry and sharp freshness give the wine a lively finish. Only 4,000 bottles were put aside for this late release.

The headline wine from Paolo Conterno is the beautifully packaged 2013 Barolo Ginestra Riserva. I always appreciate the house style of this winery located in the heart of the Ginestra cru at the back side of Monforte d'Alba and looking toward Serralunga d'Alba. These wines always show an extra degree of richness and dark fruit. The delivery is broad and rich instead of vertical and sharp, and the wine wraps evenly over the palate. This expression from the cool 2013 vintage shows good structure, freshness, integrated tannins and a long succession of dark fruits. This was a release of some 4,000 bottles.
