The samples from this co-operative were just a little inconsistent. The 2009 Casa Gualda Seleccion C&J is pure Tempranillo raised in new and used French and American oak. It offers a strong, chocolate-scented bouquet with moderate definition, while the palate is simple, with crisp leafy red fruit, nicely judged acidity and a pleasing, precise nose that has much more elegance than the nose suggests. The 2008 Seleccion C & J, a 100% Tempranillo cuvee aged in new oak for 5 months followed by 9 months in used oak, is a round, ripe, balanced wine with balsamic notes, plum, and black cherry. The 2005 Seleccion C & J is 100% Tempranillo sourced from 30-year-old vines and aged for 7 months in new French and American oak before racking into seasoned oak for an additional 9 months. It has the beginnings of an aged appearance with its garnet rim and secondary aromas are starting to develop. Toast, pencil lead, Asian spices, incense and blackberry scents are followed by a still tightly wound wine with ample fruit and balance. It requires several years of additional cellaring but should ultimately reward patience. Drink it from 2015 to 2025. Casa Gualda’s current collection is uniformly excellent.
