The 2004 Costers de Mas Igneus is 80% Garnacha Negra and 20% Carinena sourced from vines over 80 years old and aged for 12 months in new Allier barrels before bottling without fining or filtration. Opaque purple in color, it reveals a complex bouquet of wood smoke, toast, slate, damp earth, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by a full-bodied, opulent wine with layers of fruit, earthy spiciness, a smooth texture, and a long, pure finish. Give it 3-4 years of additional cellaring and drink it through 2025.
Mas Igneus, which released its first wines in 1997, claims to be the first in Priorat to produce certified organic wines (those labeled FA). The current releases include one white wine. Only a tiny percentage of the wine produced in Priorat is white but they can be some of the most interesting white wines made in Spain.
