The Sassetti Livio Pertimali 2018 Brunello di Montalcino reveals medium-dark concentration and a blackish garnet hue. The wine is saturated and rich, carrying heavy fruit weight that takes away from the more delicate and nuanced flavors of Sangiovese. Instead, this wine delivers cured tobacco, exotic spice, tilled earth and baked blackberry. The wine feels a little too cooked on the close. This is a 50,000-bottle production.

The Sassetti Livio Pertimali 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is quite bright and lifted with cherries and fresh fruits that pop from the glass. The primary intensity is radiant in this wine, setting it apart from many of its peers. It covers the palate with mid-weight intensity, nice acidity and silky tannins. The brightness you get here is so attractive now, so I see little reason to wait much longer before pulling this cork. This is a 38,000-bottle release.

I had put a question mark next to my original score for this wine when I first tasted it at the beginning of the year, as that sample appeared very ripe and maybe a bit oxidized. Coming back to the Pertimali - Livio Sassetti 2015 Brunello di Montalcino six months later, I discover a wine that is drier (as opposed to jammy or overtly overripe) but quite intact and balanced overall. The tannins are a bit dusty and so is the fruit, with powered cherry and raspberry flavors. There are tart fruit flavors that give this bottle a better sense of lift and energy, especially compared to that first sample.

The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino is a sure-footed and steady wine with mild aromas of wild berry, cherry, spice and tar. Although the wine's intensity is slightly reduced in this vintage, this expression faithfully transmits all the fundamental characteristics associated with aged Sangiovese from beautiful Montalcino. The tannins are mild and integrated and this wine is best suited to near or medium-term consumption. Some 15,000 bottles were made.

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of beautiful and noteworthy elegance. It shows a fine and delicate quality of fruit, with wild berry and dark cherry at the front. That fruit intensity builds slowly as the wine warms in the glass, but it always stays confined and graceful throughout. Similar elements characterize the mouthfeel that is lean, compact and silky.
