The bouquet here feels a bit faded and does not have the bright fruity accents that characterize this warm vintage. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva shows dark fruit elements with spice, leather and scorched earth. This wine is not as exuberant or lively as many of its peers. I tasted this wine next to the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, and that wine was more expressive and complete.

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is aged in large Slavonian casks for 48 months. Despite that long time in oak, the wine has emerged surprisingly fresh and intact in terms of its primary fruit. The warm vintage has helped to underline those aromas of cherry and dried raspberry. Like the 2012 base Brunello, this Riserva delivers a thin and compact mouthfeel with moderate persistence. This wine offers a streamlined interpretation of Sangiovese and shows less opulence as a result. Only 2,600 bottles are made.
