Readers who enjoy more classically-built wines will find much to admire Le Macioche's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. It presents a beautiful array of red cherries, tobacco leaves and underbrush with notable purity, focus and depth in an understated expression of Sangiovese from Montalcino. Today it comes across as somewhat shut down and the tannins remain imposing, neither of which is surprising given that this wine is made form some of the highest vineyards in the zone. It is a gem, though, and the only thing it requires is patience. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.
