Coming from vines planted over 100 years ago, which have been trained up to chest level to increase air circulation and sun exposure to the berries, the 2018 Zinfandel Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard was aged in French oak, 50% new, for 10 months. Deep garnet-purple colored, it skips out of the glass with notes of red currant jelly, raspberry pie and wild blueberries plus touches of stewed plums, wild sage and tilled soil with a waft of cast iron pan. Full-bodied, the palate has beautiful elegance and fine-grained tannins with a lively backbone lifting the pure black and blue fruit flavors to a long finish. 306 cases were made.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color—WOW—the 2017 Zinfandel Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard has an impressive perfume of rose hip tea, dried lavender, candied violets and chocolate-covered cherries over a core of baked plums, blackberry preserves and warm blueberries plus hints of raspberry leaves, dried Provence herbs and tilled soil. Full-bodied, rich and decadently fruited, it has a firm, chewy texture and bold freshness, finishing long and earthy. 236 cases were made.

The 2016 Hartford Zinfandel Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard is medium to deep garnet-purple in color and gives up intense notes of crushed black cherries, mulberries, plum preserves and blackberry compote with hints of star anise, cracked black pepper, hoisin and potpourri plus a waft of stewed tea. Full, concentrated and decadent in the mouth, it has a firm backbone of chewy tannins and wonderful freshness lifting the opulent fruit to a very long finish. 280 cases produced.

The 2015 Zinfandel Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard (another century-old parcel in the Russian River) shows tart acids, tangy red and black cherry fruit, notes of roasted meat, crushed pepper, and briary, zesty, classic Zinfandel flavors that tip the scales at 15.5% natural alcohol. This is big, juicy, succulent Zinfandel with great acid. Drink it over the next decade.

The 2014 Zinfandel Fanucchi Wood Road Vineyard also comes from nearly century-old Zinfandel vines, aged in 30% new French oak prior to being bottle unfined and unfiltered after eight months. This is as close to perfection as a Zinfandel can get, and interestingly enough, there is a little Petite Sirah in the blend, which may add to the blue fruit and floral character that this incredibly complex, multidimensional, magnificent Zinfandel offers. This is right up there among the greatest Zinfandels I ever tasted in Northern California, and literally must be consumed to be believed. Huge fruit, big, bold flavors, and an all-American style make for quite an expressive, exotic, super-concentrated and compelling Zinfandel. Drink it over the next 5-8 years.
