Picked at a moderate 88° to 90° Oechsle, the 2022 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Sp?tlese opens with an intense and aromatic yet also coolish bouquet of ripe, tropical fruits and flinty notes of crushed blue slate. Vinified in stainless steel, this is a savory, saline and crunchy, rather light and stimulating Sp?tlese that should be cellared for a year or two. 7.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in May 2023.

From ungrafted, 20-year-old vines that were picked at 87° Oechsle two weeks after the Kabinett, the 2021 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Sp?tlese opens with a clear, bright and intense, yet floral and stony rather than fruity nose with flint stone notes. Lush and round on the palate, this is a dense and saline but also juicy, now tropical-flavored Sp?tlese with enormous drive and tension. The wine is straight, crisp and piquant and will be highly digestible for decades, but don't challenge your stomach too early because the acidity is pretty serious here: 9.3 grams per liter, which cuts through the concentrated fruit (64 grams per liter of residual sugar) like a Japanese knife. 8% stated alcohol. Entirely based on healthy grapes from the first-class parcels Kribslay and H?dlay, the 2019 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Sp?tlese opens with a picture-book bouquet of a Sp?tlese from this amazing terroir. Clear, intense, precise and flinty on the nose, offering perfectly ripe Riesling fruit with weathered slate as well as herbal aromas in a highly delicate and even floral way. Round and piquant on the well-concentrated, filigreed and finessed yet juicy palate, this is a gorgeously salty and piquant Sp?tlese with a highly stimulating finish and ripe apple aromas on the aftertaste. This is buoyant, frisky and highly elegant, possibly the finest Treppchen Sp?tlese I have tasted from Christian Hermann so far (from AP 7 20 in May 2020). Fermented entirely in stainless steel. Total production: 6,000 bottles. 9% alcohol.

From entirely healthy grapes sourced in the Kriebslay and picked at 95° Oechsle, the 2018 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Sp?tlese (AP 7 19) opens with a lovely clear, fresh and spicy/flinty bouquet of ripe, concentrated, healthy fruit aromas intermingled with delicate lemon zest notes. Lush but crystalline and persistently piquant on the palate, this is a sweet but elegant, refined and playful Treppchen Sp?tlese with a quiet course over the palate and a finely gripping finish. It's highly attractive and seductive already today. Bottled with 8% alcohol, 90 grams per liter of residual sugar and 7 grams per liter of total acidity; closed with a screwcap. Tasted in July 2019.

From the Kribslay parcel, the 2017 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Sp?tlese offers a tropical bouquet of flinty-tinged passion fruit, mango and crushed slate. The palate is racy-piquant, generous and lush, almost creamy, very intense but also salty and very stimulating, with great tension and mineral grip. Tasted in March 2019.
