Sylvaner makes only 4% of the total production of the domaine, but that seems to be enough to produce one of the finest in Alsace. From old vines in the Clos des Capucins and a flat part behind the domaine, the pale yellow colored 2014 Sylvaner Réserve displays a very clear, precise, fresh and subtle bouquet that reminds me of Chablis. Quite full-bodied, very elegant, dry and fresh on the palate, this has a crisp and straight though not steely character that reveals a highly elegant expression of white fruits and a lingering salinity. Very delicately built with an excellent structure and a good length.

The 2012 Sylvaner Reserve exhibits crisp acid along with hints of apple skins and honey in a fresh, medium-bodied, stylish, dry format. It should drink well for 3-4 years. It-s a shame the drier style of white wines from Alsace has fallen out of favor and selections for consumers are few and far between (a complete contrast to the abundant riches available 20-25 years ago). Earthy and green herbal notes (suggestive of turnip and marjoram) but also a juicy core of Bosc pear fruit inform Weinbach's 2011 Sylvaner Reserve, a wine much more typical for contemporary renditions of its cepage - not to mention less strikingly successful - than the corresponding 2010. But there is plenty to like here. Broad and soft in feel, this lovely libation finishes with satisfying, juicy persistence, pear pip, iodine and nut husks lending counterpoint by way of piquant stimulation. Plan to enjoy it by 2016. The sudden death at age 47 of Laurence Faller this June represents a terrible loss to Alsace viticulture and to wine lovers worldwide, not to mention a tragic blow to her young family and to Collette and Catherine Faller, who along with Catherine's son Theo (hands-on vineyard manager since 2003) will continue to run Domaine Weinbach. Laurence had taken a virtual leave of absence from her family's estate in 2010 to devote her attention to raising her two small children, but the biodynamic viticultural approaches and style of vinification that she developed remained as guiding principles, and she had returned to full-time work at her family's estate in 2013. Picking for Riesling did not begin here in 2010 until after mid-October, and even then, ripeness was possible only thanks to extremely low yields, which were also the reason that harvesting was finished already on October 28. The last time that harvest here started so late was in underripe (and unlamented) 1984, but on that occasion, picking did not conclude until the 25th of November! The generosity in both style and yield of 2011 was welcome here as elsewhere after the challenges and small crop of 2010; and in characteristic Weinbach form, the Fallers managed to convey considerable stylistic clarity and precision to the resultant wines, just as they imparted richness to wines of 2010. The harvest of 2011 did not begin until mid-September, and Riesling was only brought in beginning the end of that month. It's worth noting, incidentally, that quite a few of the Weinbach 2010s have dropped significant amounts of tartrate crystals, not something that would have adversely affected the balance of these universally high-acid wines - if anything, the opposite - but something that will inevitably end up shimmering in some of your guests' glasses. As usual, alongside the principle offerings from two vintages I was brought up-to-date by the Fallers on their nobly sweet wines from a preceding vintage, in this case 2009. The Weinbach 2010 Sylvaner Reserve reveals aromas of nut oils, milled grain, ripe pear, purple plum, as well as distilled essences of those just-mentioned fruits. Tart pear skin and faintly toasty and nutty notes are allied on a firm palate with pit-tinged plum and Riesling-like fresh lime that convey vigor and refreshment to a lingering finish in which salt and chalk serve for further mouthwatering appeal. This tour de force of Clos de Capucin potential - not to mention that of an often unjustly denigrated cepage - is likely to remain exciting through at least 2018.
