Sage flower and citrus oils in the nose of Weinbach’s 2007 Sylvaner Reserve put me in mind of Muscat; and alkalinity, surprisingly bright acidity, along with the perseverance of herbal notes on the palate all underscore a rather brisk impression. A spinach-like suggestion of things both leafy and nutty lends low tones to the persistently refreshing finish. The seeming accident of nature that is the 2006 version is more intriguing and alluring, but this will certainly outlast it, drinking well for 3-5 years.
This year, Domaine Weinbach will receive its official certification as organic and biodynamic growers. The Fallers did well in the difficult 2006 vintage – especially with those Gewurztraminer harvested before botrytis gained the upper hand – and with good reason expressed elation over the vibrancy and refinement that characterizes most of 2007s.
