The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses wafts from the glass with aromas of sweet wild berries, spices, rose petals, orange rind and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's lively and perfumed, with an elegantly muscular chassis of powdery tannins that will require and reward some bottle age.

The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses is a striking wine, soaring from the glass with scents of wilted roast petals, bergamot, oriental spices, wild berries and plums. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's vibrant and velvety, with lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. This is an immensely good Savigny from Chisa Bize and her team.

The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses has turned out nicely, mingling hints of rose petals and exotic spices with aromas of sweet berries and forest floor in an inviting mélange. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and complete, with a muscular chassis of tannin and a rich core of fruit.

The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Vergelesses was 20% destemmed this year, as Chisa Bize struggled to fit all the grapes in the fermentation tank. Offering up aromas of sweet berry fruit, plums, rose petals and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a fleshy mid-palate and attractive balance. I suspect this year's Guettes has the edge but the Vergelesses is certainly one of the highlights of the range.
