The 2009 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Malandrino stands out for its textural richness and depth. Black cherries, smoke, mocha, incense and tobacco flesh out in a super-ripe, wine that emphasizes opulence over more typical varietal notes. As good as the Malandrino is, I often find more joy in the straight Montepulciano. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019. Cataldi Madonna is one of the very finest estates in Italy. The 2008 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Malandrino is a dark, earthy wine bursting with wild cherries, underbrush, spices and tobacco. This shows quite a bit of density and richness, but also has some traces of rusticity that detract from the wine's overall balance. For the 2008 the estate lowered the percentage of wine that sees oak to 20%. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016. Cataldi Madonna is a great source for delicious wines from Abruzzo. The 2007 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Malandrino flows with jammy blackberries, blueberries, spices and French oak in an opulent style of Montepulciano. As good as this is, I find more joy in the straight Montepulciano. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2015. Cataldi Madonna is a great source for delicious wines from Abruzzo.
