The 2009 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Malandrino stands out for its textural richness and depth. Black cherries, smoke, mocha, incense and tobacco flesh out in a super-ripe, wine that emphasizes opulence over more typical varietal notes. As good as the Malandrino is, I often find more joy in the straight Montepulciano. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019.
Cataldi Madonna is one of the very finest estates in Italy. The wines are varietally expressive, full of personality and beautifully crafted.
