The 2008 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Malandrino is a dark, earthy wine bursting with wild cherries, underbrush, spices and tobacco. This shows quite a bit of density and richness, but also has some traces of rusticity that detract from the wine's overall balance. For the 2008 the estate lowered the percentage of wine that sees oak to 20%. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016. Cataldi Madonna is a great source for delicious wines from Abruzzo. I tend to gravitate towards the lower end of the spectrum, where most of the best values lie.Importer: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200
