A release of about 16,000 bottles, the Cantine Antonio Caggiano 2015 Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti is a full-bodied red wine with dark concentration and rich fruit flavors that are lasting and quite savory. At the wine's core, there is ripe, even sweet cherry fruit, but all this is framed by darker spice, leather, tar and spent ember. This expression is bold and determined, both in terms of the power of the warm vintage fruit and the amplifying effect of the oak aging. I'd reserve it for a juicy and grilled T-bone steak.

This is one of the benchmark wines for the Taurasi appellation in Campania, Southern Italy. The 2014 Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti is supple and soft but also dense and firm. This wine shows the power and the natural structure of those celebrated Aglianico tannins. You also get fresh acidity and a plethora of ripe fruit flavors with blackberry, ripe cherry and dried currant. The finish is dry and slightly astringent with sour cherry flavors. It ages in barrique for 16 months. Some 13,500 bottles were made.

This is Antonio Caggiano's top-shelf wine. The 2012 Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti does not reach the soaring heights of past editions. This is a subdued vintage with a flatter presentation of aromas. The wine's trademark elegance is there, for sure, but it is delivered at a slightly lower threshold. This was a warm vintage, and the wine offers ample richness and mouthfeel texture as a result. I am usually blown away by these wines, but this edition is more predictable overall.

The 2010 Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti is no doubt one of the best expressions of this historic wine to date. The bouquet is penetrating and deep with elegantly presented tones of dark fruit, prune, dark mineral, smoke, cherry liqueur and natural rubber. Those earthy, dark mineral tones really are this wine’s signature trait. The tannins have been managed well, showing structure and no bitter astringency. This wine should hold nicley for a decade or more.

The 2008 Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti comes across as quite simple and fruity in this vintage, with little in the way of true complexity, pedigree or structure. The overall impression is of a simple wine best enjoyed over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016. Antonio Caggiano’s wines stand out for their overt, expressive personalities.
