Even though the fruit is more vibrant in the 1999 Alchemy than the 1998, it has lost none of its size or depth. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Shiraz, it somehow manages to hide its 15.1% alcohol. It possesses more vibrancy than the 1998, in addition to deep, full-bodied flavors, noticeable spicy new oak, and hints of cassis, plums, and cherries. The dark garnet/ruby-colored 1998 Alchemy (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Shiraz) exhibits notes of black tea, mint, earth, tar, and red and black fruits. With airing, notions of prunes also emerge. Slightly rustic, but dense, heady, and concentrated, its displays some rough edges that may or may not age out. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. The prodigious 1996 Alchemy (predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Shiraz and Cabernet Franc) achieved 15% alcohol naturally. Aged in both French and American oak, and bottled unfiltered, it is a wine of extraordinary purity and multiple dimensions. Knock-out aromas of blackberry liqueur, cassis, toasty oak, and spice box are followed by a layered wine with sweet tannin and low acidity. It is full-bodied and massive, yet there is no sense of heaviness or hotness. Pure, thick, and viscous, it should drink well for 12-15 years.
