The 2020 Montefalco Rosso is an easy-drinking blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot aged in oak for one year. This is a big production of 250,000 bottles and you get lots of bang for your buck in terms of velvety fruit, creamy texture, prune, plum and more dark fruit. It's all intermingled with well-dosed spice.

An affordable Umbrian red for an accomplished producer such as Arnaldo Caprai, the 2018 Montefalco Rosso is a blend of Sangiovese, Sagrantino and Merlot. The wine shows a dark ruby color but is a little closed, with difficulty to open fully. The bouquet does eventually settle on dark cherry, plum and blackberry. The tannins are soft and elegant, and that is a good achievement.

The bouquet on the 2016 Montefalco Rosso is very floral and bright with aromas of wild rose and lavender that feel etched and pronounced in this vintage. The Sangiovese element was slightly reduced in this blend, and the Sagrantino component does come through loud and clear. I notice it especially in the firmness and tightness of the mouthfeel.

I really like the 2015 Montefalco Rosso and am happy to recommend this attractive value wine. It shows dark fruit and spice with a supple and round style. There is not too much dimension here, but the wine is upfront and immediate instead. I make roasted chicken according to an old family recipe with roasted garlic and potatoes, and this is exactly the kind of wine I'd want to pair with that dish. Some 180,000 bottles are made.

This is a terrific wine at an attractive price point. The 2013 Montefalco Rosso opens to rich concentration and a dark garnet color. The aromas are well defined and respectful to what an Umbrian red wine aspires to be. You get dark cherry and a touch of dried fruit in the form of cassis. Delicate notes of spice and tobacco remain very much in the background.
