Generally, Javillier only offers the Meursault Clos Du Cromin as a regular cuvee because it rarely possesses the natural acidity he feels is necessary for extended elevage. 1996's bright and lively high acidity levels forced him to revise his plans and produce it as a Mise Speciale. Unexpectedly, I discerned ripe olive oil aromas intermingled with more typical toasted hazelnuts. On the palate, this vivacious, racy, and medium-bodied wine has a mouth-coating oily texture and flavors reminiscent of black olives (!), stones, tangy and salty candied lemons and nuts. Anticipated maturity: Now-2003. The rating, with the range of scores in parentheses, indicates the wine was tasted from cask, not bottle.
What's Javillier's spin on the 1996 vintage? "It has the most perfect balance between body, acid, fruit, extract, and purity in my lifetime."
