The extraordinary 2003 Cherry Red (a 240-case blend of 60% Zinfandel, 25% Mourvedre, and 15% Syrah) possesses tremendous opulence as well as nobleness. Tasting like a wonderful Chateauneuf du Pape, it offers up explosive aromas of figs, kirsch liqueur, pepper, Provencal herbs, and licorice. This opulently-textured, full-bodied, lavishly rich 2003 is neither heavy nor overdone. A stunning wine that showcases the magnificent fruit that emerges from some of the vineyards planted on Paso Robles’ limestone ridges, it should drink well for 8-10 years. It would be a marvelous ringer in a flight of top 2003 Chateauneuf du Papes.
As I have written over the last several years, Linne Calodo is a name to take seriously as it represents a reference point for what can be achieved in California’s Central Coast.
