I tasted two other cuvees of Estanilles' wines, the 1996 Red Capsule Faugeres and the 1996 Cuvee Prestige. Neither was as impressive as this effort. Aged in 50% new oak (which is something I often find over-done in the Languedoc-Roussillon), this example has absorbed the oak, thus adding a complex, subtle element to the wine's full-bodied, flamboyant personality. The color is deep ruby/purple, and the wine possesses oodles of sweet blackcurrant/cassis fruit and pain grille notes. In the mouth, it is medium-bodied, mouthfilling, soft, and rich, with low acidity. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.Importer: Daniel Johnnes, Jeroboam Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 374-9415.
